@VIP: I think there's an important point here, and it gives me a little optimism, anyway: it's the constituency that elects the president, and not the other way around. If George Bush was a shitty president, it's because a shitty society stood behind him. I think that there's some small grounds for hope here (oh, god, the HOPE!) in how thoroughly disgusted with the Old Politics Americans now are. Or seem to be.

Frankly, Obama isn't nearly as liberal as I would like, but I am definitely happy to be able to at least take basic human decency in a presidency.

As the saying goes: "It would've been funny, if it weren't also true." I read Mr. Braak's earlier posting about how dissapointed he was with his peers, seeing an academic faculty appear rudely uninterested in the social progression of their field (implied, of course). The past eight years comes to mind, how it has beaten-down U.S. society's perception of (in addition to the sciences) artistic creativity, philosophical investigation and the significance of both---how even people who should care about certain things---in a feverish, single-minded fashion---have lost interest in anything that doesn't get them quickly home from work, where they can retreat into their respective holes, only engage in social contact with the 8 or 10 people who've been made "Blackberry" contacts and pretend society doesn't exist anymore (I'm sure there could be an argument in favor of it actually not existing--at least, as we've known it). Although I have much confidence in the capability of our new president, with all due respect; any movement away from the habits of the last presidency will be a vast improvement.

Good or bad, all at last 'll have to end and give way to new waves of hope and change.
