These People Are Real

Posted in Jeff Holland, Politics, Threat Quality with tags , , on September 17, 2009 by braak

Brace yourselves, everyone: Some student group was able to make a hilariously disturbing youtube video out of the virulent ignorance of the 9-12 teabagging (seriously, has nobody explained the connotation of that word to them yet?) protester-dolts.

Now, the whole thing isn’t exactly surprising – we’ve all been living with the Daily Show for long enough. But subjecting yourself to a full 10 minutes of it is certainly fatiguing. Thinking people simply aren’t built to listen to such a heady mix of rage and stupidity for sustained periods.

So, having sat through the whole thing – for YOU, dear readers – I’ve noted ten clear moments where you’ll have to stop the video, take a deeeeep, cleansing breath, and massage your temples before heading once more into the breach: Read more »

On “Glee” [UPDATED!]

Posted in Braak, reviews with tags , on September 16, 2009 by braak

Glee_logoFox has a TV show about kids in a glee club, it’s called “Glee.”  I have watched two episodes, and that makes me an expert in the subject.  So, as an exercise in my expertise, I shall discuss this show with you.

FULL DISCLOSURE:  I am probably, expertise or not, not the best person to write about this show, as I have both a tricky relationship with music and a slightly antagonistic relationship with high school, people in high school, and things that remind me of high school.

Nonetheless.  Onward.

Social Service Blues

Posted in Threat Quality on September 15, 2009 by braak

social services partnersA little while back, I hung out with a guy who – in justifying his habit of watching “Real Time with Bill Maher” – described himself as “an independent, not a Republican,” explaining that he was a die-hard atheist and believed in legalizing pot. “But, y’know, I don’t like big government or high taxes, and I’m against social programs.”

Our mutual friend (possibly seeing how visibly my skin was crawling) gestured at me and chuckled to his buddy, “Man, you are preaching to the wrong church.”

I smiled half-heartedly and listened to him yammer on about the Maher sketch, all the while wondering, “Am I just really naïve?”

Nine [edit: Ten] Diseases I Am Afraid of Getting

Posted in Braak, Curse You Warren Ellis with tags , , on September 14, 2009 by braak

rabiesThis is actually a kind of a trick, because if you asked me, “Chris, what diseases are you afraid of getting?” the only sensible answer I could reply with is, “All of them.”  But some diseases terrify me more than others because they are TERRIFYING.

As a public service to you, I am going to describe them, and describe why they are terrifying, so that way you will know which things you ought to be afraid of and when.

Behind the Scenes with ‘Hand of Danger’

Posted in Threat Quality on September 11, 2009 by braak

Another glimpse of “How the ‘Hand of Danger’ sausage (sausage…of ACTION!) is made.”

As all video-gamers know, every good action story needs a final villain. A “Boss” character, in old-school-NES “Double HoD - Rough 1Dragon” parlance. A character that can easily beat back the hero, making his triumph all the more awesome (in this case, through judicious use of magic hand-power).

Here is the script that Chris sent me:

“TOMMY  looks up to see Mr. Smith, a young-looking man, very muscular, standing in front of the idol…

Fringe Festival: Welcome to Yuba City

Posted in Braak, poetics, reviews, so very very old, theater with tags , , , on September 9, 2009 by braak

If you work in the Philadelphia theater scene, you’ve heard of Pig Iron theater.  They are famous, some kind of famous physical actors who all trained in Le Coq, or something, and they’re always doing outlandish shows like what if Chekhov’s plays were also his subconscious, or what if we did Measure for Measure, but everyone was naked and dead.  For this they are hailed as far away as New York City as brilliant experimentalists and they get all kinds of grants.

I had never seen a Pig Iron play, even though I knew I ought to, and I figured that Welcome to Yuba City, their world premiere piece in the Fringe, would be a good opportunity to see what these crazy cats are about.

Hand of Danger page 19 previewHand of Danger continues!  Looking back on this page, I think that the sequencing is a little wonky.  A flaw in the write-draw-rewrite method, I guess, is that the pacing doesn’t always line up quite the way you want it to.

Still, practice, practice.  One day you will all be pleased to say that you knew us when.
