Friday Stuff

So, Holland is struggling with deadlines today, and can’t write the Friday post.  I have to keep wrestling with this kitten so she won’t eat the power cord on the computer.  Things are tough all over.

Let’s talk about some things!

Barack Obama just won a Nobel Peace Prize.  I think that’s a little weird.  I’m told that it’s actually a myth that the Nobel Peace Prize is only awarded for successfully actually negotiating peace, and that a lot of times it’s awarded to encourage the struggle, so that’s good (more and better from Spencer Ackerman, here).  Except, now Glenn Beck and his army of retarded monkeys are going to be going on about secret ACORN conspiracies and foreign influences and whatnot, like maybe it’s the liberals fault who the Swedes picked for their fancy Swedish Oscar.

Here is a clip of Megan Carpentier on the Rachel Maddow show, kicking the shit out of Oklahoma.

Iron Age Theater has started doing a work-blog about The Life of John Henry, which is a play that I wrote.  The play goes up on November 6th, and everyone seems to be having a good time with it.

I watched this TV show Eastwick. which is a TV show based on the novel The Witches of Eastwick, by John Updike.  This is because I saw the movie a while back, and have always kind of enjoyed it.  The show is essentially a “sexy women were underappreciated but are now empowered” premise, in a little caricature of a New England town that I completely don’t care about.  Paul Gross is in it, as Daryl Van Horne, and man, I will watch the shit out of something Paul Gross in it.  But frankly, I just don’t see this show as being sustainable–the first few episodes have a running plot where the Sexy-But-Unappreciated Reporter is trying to find out who Daryl Van Horne really is, and come on–he’s the devil.  We all know he’s the devil, we saw the movie when it came out twenty years ago.  How much do you think you can do with this?

The idea of you with a kitten amuses me so much that I keep trying to figure out the profound metaphor that it actually is, rather than believing you have an actual kitten…..

A play that you wrote is being produced by a legit, professional philadelphia theatre. You are a rock star. I am jealous.

  2. Dave says:

In fairness to Obama, so far he’s welcomed dialogue with states Bush refused to meet with; opened talks on major reductions to nuclear stockpiles and, finally, he’s not George Bush.

Kissinger got the prize for ending the Vietnam war (kind of) and it was his policies that helped screw the country up as much as anyone so, frankly, I think ending a war (you helped shape) shouldn’t necessarily be a prerequisite to be considered for the award.

  3. V.I.P. Referee says:

Excellent! An amazing production seems to be brewing. What inspired you to reinterpret that story, Braak? There’s a great deal of sadness in its themes.
